We all need to move on from this, including myself. We know Reddit’s business practice. If we don’t like it help make the fediverse better. Having said that your posts will be scrapped over here to the benefit of nobody so is that better? At least on Reddit you have the option of owning their stock.
Yeah I got you. I guess I agree with you. For something current and local Twitter was your best bet. I just think it’s much more about consumption than getting anybody’s voice heard. This is especially true of X. The platform is there mainly for people with an existing large audience to get their message amplified. It’s not there to get the smartest or most interesting voices heard.
Reddit has always been much better at building community than twitter. Twitter has always been about getting somebody voice propagated. To a huge extent the louder and more belligerent you are twitter will help amplify your message because it’s in twitters financial interest. It’s not even remotely like a public square that it loves to compare itself with.
Both X and Reddit have lost my interest. I really liked Reddit but X was and is for people that like to be told what to think.

Sounds like a token gesture at best. The value of moderators is way over hyped. The real moderation happens in the upvote and downvotes that posts and comments receive.
I have never understood why people would like Lemmy and then look at any feed other than subscribed. You might as well use mastodon if just a free flow of posts is your thing. I do like the list of keywords though for those rare occasions I look at the universal feed.
I still go there when I want to answer something that I know there are posts there. Also some products run their user communities on Reddit but I have a much more utilitarian attitude towards Reddit. My focus on participation is over here.
I have lots of thoughts on this one. I totally agree that the amount of junk out there is on the increase. One of the reason I like Reddit/Lemmy is to crowd source the findings for worthwhile content. I think the secret is being selective of what you subscribe to. I also use reeder by Readwise and let it summarize using AI anything I throw its way. I then use the summary to decide if I even want to read the full content. I’m staring to pay more attention to platforms like Substack and paying for content. In general the problem you highlight is one that I think AI can’t help greatly in fixing. Maybe an AI that knows you and can pre read something and tell you if you should even bother.
If Reddits pricing was reasonable I would not find this objectionable but the way the Apollo developer spoke about this, the API pricing was meant to kill third party developers.
I suspect all social networks will need to federate eventually. Just like aol had to let the internet in or fade into irrelevance. I hope it’s something more like nostr then the Fediverse but I see this as inevitable.
This can play out in other ways. Search platforms start indexing open platforms and more links start making reference to these platforms.
They were always going to win. It’s their platform. They can do whatever they want. But… They lost my attention and paid subscription. I now only go to Reddit when I’m looking for something I can’t find elsewhere. It used to be my favorite platform.
Exactly what I’m looking for too. It does not need to be be on the site or system with the biggest user count.

Not sure about resource usage but a single instance for a given community mean a single point of failure.
I don’t really care if content I create is used to train LLMs, but I do object to Reddit monetizing the content I placed on their platform. Without somehow rewarding me for that content. I’d rather just post it here and let the LLMs train on it and let the value accumulate to the LLMs. I do think there’s a greater good for humanity. And just because I say something intelligent or unintelligent, I see that as a gift to the greater good of society. I did not create that gift as a benefit to Reddit shareholders but having said all this I’m realistic, and the best thing I can do is try to keep the value I add within open platforms like this one.
