My problem with every bit of it that I’ve seen, is that they try to make their characters every type of nerd all at once. That’s not how it works. People are obsessed with a couple niche things, they are nerds about their little area. All the characters on BBT are into, like, everything that non nerd people find nerdy. It’s absurd. No one is like that.

And from what I’ve seen, it has a tone of laughing at nerds, not laughing with them. Maybe that changes from season to season, but what I saw was enough. Just a very grating show to watch that feels like it was made for people who have that one nerdy niece or nephew that they don’t really understand but hey, this must be what they’re like with their friends!

Do this, but also cover the whole operation with a towel. Not quite stealth maybe but it’s about the best you can do.

I get nervous when my kids don’t answer me after a few seconds when I call their name at a playground when I can’t see them. I cannot imagine how horrible it would be having one of them be actually missing for hours.

I have to admit though I am visiting for game threads now that the NFL has started up. Sports is non-existent on Lemmy. I’m participating in the communities for my teams, but there’s like half a dozen of us in each one. It just isn’t the same thing and I realized that dicking around in comment sections is a big part of how I enjoy sports these days.

They’re still not getting content from me, I’m not going to use their app. But it’s hard to keep completely away when there is simply nothing even closer on lemmy or anywhere else.

Lol my wife and I absolutely used to go to 24 hour grocery stores at like midnight on weekends back before we had kids. We both love cooking so it was fun to slowly peruse the aisles looking for random things we hadn’t noticed before and coming up with ways to use them.

Lame I guess, but neither of us likes bars that much and we couldn’t afford to go out that often anyway.

I’m someone who used my main (only) shower/bath to learn this stuff on. My wife happened to be 8.5 months pregnant. Don’t be me.

I got it done, it works, it doesn’t leak, it looks how I want. But it was stressful AS FUCK, and my extremely pregnant wife was showering at the YMCA for almost a week while I was dicking around with this stuff (we re-tiled the whole tub surround, including replacing all the drywall with cement board, reinsulating, vapor barrier, etc). Like…I don’t regret doing it because we had tiles falling off and it needed to be done. And I’m glad I learned all the things I learned.

But it was not easy, I ran into tons of shit I was not prepared to handle and had to figure out on the fly, and it was very time sensitive and stressful. I might have chosen to start earlier if given another chance lol.

I will say, one of the first things I did was install shutoffs on both supply lines right below the faucet. That was a very good choice because at least the rest of the house wasn’t down.

We don’t have to like it but unfortunately profitability is by far the number one driver for…well everything. So little is accomplished by way of altruism. People are greedy. The best way to successfully incentivize climate action is for environmentally friendly actions to become the most profitable and be advertised as such.

So I agree with you that both options should be used. But I disagree that profitability is not the point. Money is always the point and always has been.

Why would you talk about metric as a whole in response to a question asking about Celsius in particular? I very openly stated that I understand why metric in general is used for measurements of length, weight, and volume and asked specifically why people argue that Celsius is superior when its weaknesses in comparison to fahrenheit are similar to imperial’s weaknesses in comparison to metric.

I would have thought that was obvious.

I’m being genuine, I’m not trying to shit on you. I’m pretty open about liking the metric system, and I think the reason we don’t use it is largely the extreme administrative costs of doing so more than anyone thinking imperial is actually better. I think most agree it’s pretty clearly worse.

But I legitimately don’t understand how people can argue Celsius over fahrenheit when the arguments for fahrenheit largely match those for the metric system.

They aren’t, which makes this meme even funnier because in my experience Canadians and Aussies are pretty likely to understand both systems and wouldn’t have a problem identifying either.

One thing I’ve never understood though. Metric is more precise for measurements (at least without needing to involve fractional measures). I totally get why it’s superior for a lot of things, and indeed it is used in many places for this exact reason.

Why would anyone say Celsius is better? Apart from freezing and boiling temps seeming somewhat arbitrary with fahrenheit, does it not allow for much higher precision with regards to temperature identification without resorting to decimals? Isn’t this the same rationale used with metric vs imperial? It seems like a double standard to me, because remembering two temperatures (for boiling and freezing) seems like a small price to pay for a more precise system.
