Edit: I don’t say this to be flippant, but rather because some people need to understand that there are real problems in this world, and this sort of situation is what can easily result from ignoring those problems for superficial reasons such as you don’t like the person who speaks about them, or the specific choice of words they use.

The current situation started with Occupy speaking out about banking practices, when large corporations failed due to their own greed, and our governments just handed them money to save them from the consequences of their own decisions. That made it abundantly clear the entire economy is rigged against the average person. You can get a rough idea of what’s happening by paying attention to how the corporate media has been whipping people into a frenzy, working relentlessly to demonize certain demographics. It might be harder to see it these days, but the current state of the media is absolutely nothing like it was prior to 2008.

How do those things actually accomplish anything against corporate interests though? One of the issues with corporations is that they have many layers of grunts in public facing places so that the people actually in charge are never even exposed to the public. The fact that people’s minds immediately go to the least effective, most self destructive, methods possible to oppose such systems is a symptom of corporate media controlling the narrative. Occupy represented an actual threat to their control, and that’s exactly why corporations have become intensely interested in divisive social issues ever since.

Are you expecting corporations to tell you about it when they do? They lie blatantly about what happened/is happening and the average person eats it up because the corporate news lied to them about the actual nature of what happened/is happening. We’re currently in the epicentre of probably the largest revolt against corporate control since the dawn of the corporation, and most people think it’s about every emotionally charged issue that exists other than the actual reason.

Sure there are good uses for it, but not the way we’ve been aggressively shoving it into every space we possibly can, consequences be damned.

That was always the point of digitizing the world. It’s crazy to me that people didn’t see it coming, but it’s nice that people are actually taking notice now.

This is ironically the exact attitude that passage speaks of. You are presented with an excerpt from one of the most important works of science ever produced, and can do nothing but mock it.

That’s really neat, but just because someone’s use of language doesn’t match your own doesn’t always mean there’s something wrong with them that they need to change. An important part of communication is an earnest attempt to understand the speaker, instead of just dismissing what they’ve expressed outright because you don’t like their word choice.

Frankly I already “dumbed it down” quite considerably from the original quote, in which Copernicus expressed the reasons he was reluctant to share his research proving the Earth orbits the Sun:

Therefore I debated with myself for a long time whether to publish the volume which I wrote to prove the earth’s motion or rather to follow the example of the Pythagoreans and certain others, who used to transmit philosophy’s secrets only to kinsmen and friends, not in writing but by word of mouth, as is shown by Lysis’ letter to Hipparchus. Sure, but to paraphrase Copernicus, too many want to engage in such pursuits not because they have anything to contribute, but rather because it benefits them either financially or socially, and so they only end up playing the part of drones among bees.

Oh, I absolutely believe that we need to make changes. Society is a living thing which MUST move in order to sustain itself. What I can’t agree with, however, is people looking at it as though it were an inanimate object like a computer, and picking it apart as though they’re writing a computer program, often without any attempts made at all to learn about the history which has led it to existing in the form which it does. I would be a lot more open to arguments from the LGBTQ movement, if the average influencer had actually studied some of the publicly available references explaining how and why we have built our societies this way. Yet instead, the movement is dominated by those who are proud to have never engaged with historical philosophical works, religious or otherwise, and that is what is truly offensive about it all.

Edit: This very same issue is actually one place in which I can’t see eye to eye with a large number of religious people either today, because many don’t even appear to possess the recognition of the importance of educating oneself upon the foundations of the way of life which they engage in, instead using it as a rubber stamp of approval, with as few actual qualifications as they can get away with pursuing.

Well, those other problems become dramatically more difficult to manage while there is a very vocal movement attempting to nit-pick and re-write nuances of our existing social structures, like they think it’s some computer program instead of the cumulative product of thousands of years of trial and error paid for in blood, sweat and tears.

As if trolling isn’t a real thing that people do?

Before 2016 posts moved extremely fast. There used to be a joke that the entire front page was new every time you refreshed it. After The_Donald figured out how to game their algorithm to dominate the front page, reddit took advantage of the opportunity to neuter the algorithm completely so that it was more advertiser friendly. Now the front page remains static for most of the day, so sponsored advertiser posts get more exposure.

It’s exactly the same way that “alt-right” became popular around 2015 originally to self identify as a life long liberal who felt they could no longer support the political left, but also weren’t comfortable with fully supporting the political right. It was seized upon and redefined to remove those people’s ability to succinctly identify their unique position, to maintain the artificial 50/50 left/right divide in the public’s mind.

And yes I am aware that it was once used by some shithead nobody cares about before that, but I’m talking about it’s popular use in recent times.
