I used Joplin extensively for ~2 years, but I was constantly put off by the desktop applications UI and how my notes was stored in SQLite. The move to obsidian felt natural and I felt more in ownership over my files in their existing structure. Granted, obsidian is closed source and could go rogue, but when that happens, I am prepared to jump ship without too much pain.
Its no big deal, I’m happy being able to try out various distros (including a rescue-distro) from one USB stick. I rarely need to boot windows from a stick.

This article is two years old, and perhaps discord have improved their accessibility, since this user find it more accessible then matrix. Yes, it’s a single usercase, but worth mentioning nonetheless.
I think there are other arguments against Discord that haven’t been mentioned: data privacy. I know there was an instance where Discord collected user without their consent, and that is enough for me to avoid the platform.
I much rather use matrix or the horridly old IRC protocol than Discord. Or forums. Or just plain old issues!

Out of curiousity, how would nohup make your situation different? As I understand, nohup makes it possible to keep terminal applications running even when the terminal session has ended.
There’s plenty of good terminals out there, the question is what features that you need in it?
As for syncing configurations, check out a dot file manager such as chezmoi unless you want to sync over bare git.
Tabby is a nice all-in-one solution, though it will trigger some people with its design choices and it being electron based. I liked it when I had to keep track of different machines with different keys. Albeit it is something that can be achieved with ssh config and a dot file manager.
NPP is indispensable, it is the Windows killer-app.

Thanks for this. I think this is also an example of a opensource software that is selfhostable, but is intended for a different audience. I think Zammad, Monicahq etc fall under this category. I suppose one would need a solution with an entirely different architecture that’s aimed for selfhosters, rather than hope that omnivore becomes easier to selfhost.
Can you elaborate on your experiences so far? What’s required in order to selfhost it, and what features will be missing…?
I used and paid for wallabag, but it lacks so many basic features it was a pain to use. Just trying to tag articles was a chore, since wallabag doesn’t suggest existing tags.
Nocodb can run locally as it is distributed as a binary (among other formats).

There is at least plugins that enables sync by alternative ways. They’re not as elegant, but work.
Since everything, including settings, is stored in the same root folder as the notes - you can sync your settings along your notes through other tools too.
