Why not?
(Also look at the community you are replying in… What use is there on quesrioning why people use reddit on the c/reddit, it’s like when people say “why are you using 4chan” on r/4chan lol)

I sure love it when people use a single opinion to smear a person’s entire legacy, he was great not only for the tech stuff but his stance on scientific articles piracy and a lot of other stuff too.
I won’t say that that his opinion on cp is a great one (there is no doubt at least for me that distribution should always be illegal), but he wrote it as a 16 years old and it was guided due to his extremism for free speech over the internet, regardless, it’s not like he himself was an evil person distributing child pornography, to paint him as an overall shitty person for an opinion like this seems idiotic imo
This is q bit personal and maybe slightly unrelated, but it reminds me of when people defend non-offending pedos (as in they are attracted to children because yhey are born that way but have not offended, nor groomed, nor harmed a child) saying the stigma should be erased because that would allow us to actually help this people who constantly hide it, therefore reducing the harm to children. This position has unironically got me called a pedophile and a lot of horrible stuff over the internet, and I would draw parallels to this situation, no matter how you slice it this opinion should not be used singlehandedly to state he is someone that shouldn’t be respected. Especially since he is not defending the harm itself being done to children (as in the production of CP) which would still be a crime under his view. (Although distribution of course grows the market so it’s idiotic not to go after that too), but as I said, it’s a bad opinion but that doesn’t make him a bad person.
No clue if this community allows for links, but I just checked on nyaa.si and if you search by leechers, the second result is an 189 gb file with seasons 1 to 19
As an aside note, I don’t like when OP’s don’t interact with the posts they make. Especially on posts like this it would have really interesting to gain more insight on where he was coming from or if the replies are making sense in his mind.
I’m probably reading too much into this, there are many reasons not to reply, but when I see a popular post that has 0 replies by OP I feel there’s dishonesty.
I really like your narratization of the events, for me it had to do with him always being shitty but people always turning a blind eye because they fall into grand futuristic schemes instead of recognizing the union busting, sex scandal fiend may be a piece of shit.
Also a factor you didn’t mention was his fall into the alt right which has gained ire from most people over the internet (aside from right wing echo chambers or his twitter clique)
Tldr: All in all, Elon hasn’t really changed how he operates, it’s just that since aligning openly with the right he has been more open about a lot of shit and also has been boosting a lot of shit he probably doesn’t really believe. This in turn has extinguished a lot of the support he had in the internet which leads to people actually scrutinizing his character and a lot more than what he says has come to light or is being analyzed in a different light to what it was back then, painting Elon as the evil and stupid billionare he actually is.
The actual comment:
I know you said to not say he has always been like that, but the honest truth is he has been like that, it’s just that the media was used to taking everything he said at face value and he was a bit more restrained (although not necessarily on interviews themselves).
The amount of controversy about him busting unions, having poor working conditions, stealing credit from his engineers, this was always public knowledge even when he was generally beloved by the common redditors. This is not meant to be a dig or anything, but at least on the leftists circles I tend to participate in this was always mentioned whenever he was in talks, it’s just that most people don’t care when billionares are exploitative pieces of shit, yhey just care about the image they sell.
He was also always surrounded by stupid scandals pre 2021, be it the submarine pedo (where for some reason I saw people on refdit defending him), him suddenly denying his family had shares on emerald mines, him and all his sex and abuse scandals, it all made news but got forgotten as soon as he pulled an “epic move” like doge coin…
What I said before is regarding his actions and actual contributions to the companies he controls, which is related to why he is do shit at handling twitter as a company, now about his public persona, the tweets he currently posts and why he is hated en mass.
Most his memes have always been reposts, buy the problem is that he now aligns with the far right in the united states, there are many reasons of why this happened and this has been absolutely clear when he daid that shit about Dems being shit now do he moved towards republicans (which is a lie but it’s the poiny where the public noticed he is a republican despite him being on the forefront of electric cars), due to his alignment and changes to the poilitical spehere on the US being on the right now means believing a lot of racial conspiracy lies, that environmental change is a lie (which ironically hurts his own business), that January 6 was justified, etc. Elon right now boosts about any and all right wing accounts he ca find by replying “how curious” to the most insane racist meme about the DESPITE BEING 13% meme
I was talking about the reason of why some comments weren’t deleted, which a few weeks ago was being talked about as a conspiracy and was striking me as a little weird conduct by reddit since it was almost a non issue due to the small volume of people doing this compared to the harm of a potential lawsuit.
I agree erasing everything should be easier though
Seems reasonable, but reddit should still be able to delete those posts and comments from privated subreddits if requested to
VLemmy AWOL Investigation hope the link works, if not just search for the title on search bar and it will appear.
I dont really regret having one of my first serious accounts on lemmy, at least I was part of the ride and the most annoying thing has been resubbing to small communities (now I have an extension to store my communities just in case)
No one really knows, there are some plausible theories of negligence but in reality it is most probable the owner just decided to pull off the plug dince not only the server went down but the donation links did too.
He didn’t tell anyone and no one has been in contact with him
Like 3 days after the server went down there was a post on an investigation on what happened which made some discoveried and said they had some leads however there hasn’t been a follow-up to my knowledge
Vlemmy was a good one, although you are almost two weeks late with your question since it fell down :( (Although it was going to defederate with an instance the day before closing due to not wanting to host illegal content, for obvious reason)
I would love for another one to sprung out, I myself am quite trigger happy with blocking people and communities (even instances through my app) so I would always be happier being the one shaping the content instead of another person doing it for me, regardless of if we would block the same instances at least I would know what I have blocked.
I would probably never browse the local feed on an instance that intentionally never defederates though, the potential to jost a plethora of unsavory people is too high (although that hadn’t really happened with vlemmy, that instance was insanely good at that)
I really don’t think Lemmy is an instant replacement for reddit, nor should we expect it to be. (Even if it was to ever replace reddit it will take years)
Communities need to grow organically here and move people over by the content that gets produced, one shouldn’t really expect for entire subreddits to move over, it will always be a few people and from there it grows.
Hell take r/piracy for example which I think is one of the most “successful” migrations, some of the main mods created and instance and the same community here on Lemmy, they also promoted it heavily before leaving r/piracy to those that wanted to stay over at reddit. While the piracy community is pretty good and vibrant, it is not yhe same as it was in reddit both in volume and in content produced. I much prefer what it is here since it’s a lot less meme focused but the point I’m trying to make is that even if communities migrate here, the content is different, a lot of users that produced content won’t immediately come over and 8t will be its own thing.
At that point just making the community again here organically instead of relying on the og mods to vome over will probably have a similar effect.
I’m currently seeding quite a few… Let’s see what they can do
It’s normal to not know this since almost no one outside of the US uses phone messages instead of Whatsapp or telegram
Its within connect, and they would probably be able to see your comments in a neutral instance. It is a temporary solution but I have been really pleased with it by blocking most porn only instances, at least its useful in that regard.
There was an issue on github asking for this but I dont know its status
The app connect for lemmy on android allows for this right now, I believe it blocks posts and comments alike
There is probably also a browser extension, but I haven’t really searched since I’m mostly a mobile user
I thought you were talking about the idea he was cleaning the servers from such content, but now I see you were actually saying he completely pulled the plug.
So yes, that is a posibility, but not giving any sort of heads up its closing or anything is just weird even if that were the case, this would not constitute a larger admission than what he already did since he already had said he was defederating from an instance to avoid that kind of content. And to my knowledge, as long as they are moderating this stuff social media and the like dont put the owner in trouble, otherwise every ceo of twitter or facebook would have gone to prison a long time ago.
The only reason I dont think that is the case is because the donation links are down. I still dont know what happened, I wish someone knew his mastodon or any other social media.
Probably it was something else since the donation links are down… Hope he isnt in some sort of legal trouble or something, and I dont want to think of worse scenarios of why everything would be shut down so abruptly
I mean, yeah somewhat, I’m just pointing out the idiocy of asking that question in a place specifically designed to talk about those places.
Also, regardless of how bad the sites as a whole are, making the transition fully is just plain too difficult, there are communities that haven’t moved and no matter if you are putting effort to have them here, you won’t be able to get a question about a program answered if there are 3 active people on a community
