I agree with a lot of this sentiment. My goal is to try to “be the change I want to see in the world”.

So I occasionally challenge the dumb group think I see on here. Sometimes it well received but not always.

One thing Ive noticed is how reactionary and un-nuanced a lot of posts are. I guess it makes sense since a majority of the users here self-selected to leave a site in protest. There is a bias towards being “reactionary”.

But the vibe feels off on Lemmy and I can’t put my finger on exactly why, but I certainly don’t feel like a lot of my people are here. Don’t get me wrong, I love hearing different opinions and viewpoints but the way a lot of them are presented here feel very “well ackshually!” or sanctimonious. It’s less like that on mastodon, but still there. Maybe less “fun” and hearted. It’s almost too serious, but even the less serious stuff isn’t as fun/funny.

Hacker news feels better. Almost reminds me of old school reddit or even forums.

I think the fediverse and Lemmy would have been better if it was designed where each “subreddit”/channel was an instance. Basically federate the small communities but don’t make a bunch of small “reddits” where it’s fragmented and watered down.

There could be hubs with curated channels or apps that let you curate channels but each channel is effectively independent.

Anyway, I don’t know that that would even fix the vibe problem with the fediverse but I think it would help communities grow, evolve, and mature better.

The east Palestine disaster isn’t this admins fault. It’s anl negligent rail companies fault combined with deregulation from previous Congresses and the previous administration. Not to mention both previous Congress and admin sat on an infrastructure spending packages that could have addressed antiquated rail infrastructure. Ironically, Biden managed to pass the biggest infrastructure package in American history (with a divided Congress). With clean energy and resiliency built it. And if I recall correctly FEMA and Co are still monitoring and supporting the clean up.

Stuff like this happens from time to time in agriculture. UK has issues with TB in dairy cows which requires them to cull herds. It’s really shitty and unfortunate but this type of thing has happened for millenia.

It’s better that they report it so we can address it and find ways to prevent it happening in the future.

And unless everyone is willing to go 100% vegan tomorrow, we need farmers, livestock, and the like to keep our meat and dairy supply flowing.

So this guy could have gotten it from the same bird the cows got it from as well. A dozen other people were tested and none came back positive.

All other cases we’ve seen have come from bird contact. So there is a reasonable chance this guy got it from an infected bird without realizing it.

Also, none of the cows have died (dunno if that’s a good thing or bad thing).

Money doesn’t create happiness, but it definitely sets up an environment for it to thrive.

There are a ton of negative comments on here, but i think the reality is: people value different things.

When you have certain values you will sacrifice certain things to practice those values/achieve those goals.

Some people value charity work because helping the community and people makes them feel good–even if it’s more work on their plate.

Some people sacrifice their personal lives to achieve a career goal. Sometimes that’s for financial reasons, sometimes that’s for ego reasons, sometimes it’s “meeting a challenge”.

Some people will sacrifice their career to have less stress or focus on their family. Some people value their hobbies, relationships, personal interests to the point where they’ll pick jobs that let them focus on those things–even if those jobs don’t pay as well, even if they aren’t “progressing” up the ladder.

And for what it’s worth, your values (may) shift over time. I never wanted kids for the longest time. Then I did.

I valued career progression for ego and financial reasons–and now, that’s shifted.

I sacrificed spending time with my friends when I had my kid, but now I am putting a lot of effort into those friendships because I value them and that requires work. That means I didn’t take a job offer that would have paid more, so I would have time for my family and friends.

I value those things more at this point.

I value my time playing computer games, so I sacrifice my sleep so I can do that. :)

I did hear a solid counter point recently.

All American social media is banned in China. Effectively, if we don’t do something like this, the Chinese social media becomes the biggest (because they restrict ours but we wouldn’t restrict theirs).

Mafia shit or international power politics shit.

The danger here is they could do this to Facebook or Instagram in other countries (eg India)and use this as a precedent. I’m not sure India wants to pick that fight with the US, but this is all a weird game that’s being played.

But yes, on the surface, and the immediate impact, this seems like such a fucking dumb tone deaf thing that our legislature pushed through without most Americans wanting this.

I…agree with the “company” I think. This sounds like dev sour grapes but what the company was asking them to do seems better from the customer pov and for cyber security I’m general.

There are different audiences for demos though. It should be that way at the “working level”. When you start moving up the chain with more senior leadership in your org, it starts to make more sense to have the PM do the demos/briefs.

Usually devs don’t particularly care or want to and sometimes they aren’t really qualified to–its not their skillset. But if it’s a good PM, that’s where they shine. That’s the value they bring to the project. They (should) know the politics, landmines, things that specific leaders would care about (and to highlight for them), and how to frame it to current business needs. They have the context to understand when a seemingly innocuous question is actually pointed. They might not know the intricacies of your code, but they (should) know the intricacies of the organization. That’s not something most developers know, and why should they? That’s not their job.

Sometimes it even involves groundwork meetings and demos to make sure you have support from other key components in your org-- like getting your CTO excited because one of his performance goals was x and your project is the first real implementation of x. Now, you have the CTO ready to speak on your behalf in front of the CIO. As a PM you know that the CIO has been getting flack from the CFO because there hasn’t been a good way to capture costs for Y, but your system starts the org down the path to fix that. Now they are both excited about the project and in your corner. Etc etc

As a former PM/PO who has moved up the chain, your PM is full of shit and you should look around. Looking out for your top talent is how you succeed as a PM.
