Centuries of mass immigration built the US economy. Y’all are acting like economics is all zero-sum and more people = everyone is poorer, but the amount of jobs doesn’t stay constant as the amount of people increases. The US always had an influx of immigrants to fuel the ever-growing economic machine.

There’s plenty of reasons why a lot of people in the US can’t afford to live in cities, etc. None of it is because of immigration, it’s mostly corporate greed and stupid zoning laws.

As for negative effects - if you do it TOO much, particularly with a very strong grip, then don’t be surprised if, when having actual intercourse, you’re just not feeling much and might be unable to reach orgasm. You might even be uninterested in your partner sexually. A few days without masturbation will fix it though, doesn’t seem to be permanent. Day 2 without doing it and I couldn’t keep my eyes (or hands) off my wife’s body.

I ran Gentoo for about 3 years (and will likely return soon) and I reckon there are plenty of really advanced Ubuntu users who know more about how my system works than I do.

Any mainstream general purpose distro can do mostly anything and can be used by power users. Some should ONLY be used by power users, but that doesn’t make them inherently better than a distro that both a newbie and a power user can understand and use.

You know why I use Gentoo? Literally the bragging rights. I doubt I’m optimizing things THAT much with my fancy compiler flags.

English at least has “going to” and “will” for future. In Estonian you just use present simple and the only way to know you’re talking about the future is if you hint it with some time related word.

You just say “I go to the supermarket” and it’s ambiguous. You say “I go to the supermarket tomorrow” and you know it’s talking about the future.

There’s a localization module available for the US, it should handle the arcane tax code and everything, but I haven’t tried.

You get access to the source code you use. If you pay for an enterprise license, you can access the enterprise source code too, but it’s indeed a proprietary license, you can’t really sell modifications.

I do wish it was fully free & open source (because that wouldn’t affect me, I’m not on their payroll, I just work with the software), but I still prefer the current model over Dynamics 365 or SAP (though I believe Microsoft open sourced some or all of their Dynamics 365 Business Central code too? I haven’t really kept up).

If Odoo ever decides to close their open source business and only offer it with a closed source, you bet your ass there are going to be dozens of forks of the latest open source version. I’m fairly sure my own employer would do the same, our CTO is an open source evangelist. Would probably RiiR the core even.

Free in FOSS stands more for what you’re allowed to do than what it costs. The devs have to support themselves somehow, the project is absolutely massive and has a bunch of dedicated developers on the payroll.

The fact that Facebook does everything is what keeps people coming back. I haven’t scrolled my feed in years, but I still make use of Marketplace and Messenger sometimes. It’s the network effect at play too.

You can try out Odoo, it’s heavily customizable so you can add in the parts you don’t find existing modules for - and customize existing modules too.

Honestly? Walking 95 meters to the grocery store is way less effort than getting in the car, putting on your seat belt, starting the car, driving off, and parking.

I lived 300 meters from a small grocery store and a 5 minute drive from a bigger one. I almost never went to the bigger one even though it had a better selection of food.

I visited the US once for a week. Visited Walmart exactly once, and Wegmans every other time. Wegmans blows even my European expectations for a grocery store out of the water.

I did the same math and my results came out the opposite way - in a much cheaper country however. I had a rent free situation over an hour away, but ended up renting an apartment near work. My time alone was worth it, being able to pay the month’s rent using one week’s commute time for freelancing after work. And the monthly fuel cost itself would’ve been 2/3 of my month’s rent.

Everyone’s circumstances are different. I made what I believe was the most sensible economic decision - paying to get out of commuting. For you, the opposite was sensible, commuting to reduce rent. Can’t really judge you for doing what’s best for your wallet in these tough times we’re living.

Well, I rebooted to a black screen after login, but ctrl + alt + t works to bring up a new terminal window and alt + space conjures the… whatever it’s called, thingy that can be used to launch programs, calculate things, or search files. So all in all, my computer’s completely usable, I’d just like to get the menus and panels back sometime. Unfortunately, I have literally no free time, which is also why using Gentoo is such a brilliant idea for me.
