  • Amazing progress. Hopefully the rest of Asia can follow suit in short order.

I met a number of LGBTQ+ folks in China who were wonderful, honest people, but most of them were afraid to publicly display or talk about their sexuality/gender identities due to the risk of social/legal reprisal, given the deteriorating state of policies towards LGBTQ+ rights in recent years.

While other countries in East/Southeast Asia have begun to open up to the idea of same-sex marriage like Taiwan in 2019 and now Thailand, a lot in China see this as a symptom of growing westernization to be opposed. Logic being that if the westernized countries who we don’t like start to embrace the idea, we should reject it. And unfortunately a lot of Asia follows China’s lead in particular.

This used to be me when I used to work at a grocery store and I would go on break.

Then I learned how much sugar the industrially produced loaves that pass for baguettes in the US contain.

Ignorance is truly bliss. And about 1300 calories.

  • I am assuming it may be related to a couple prominent news stories.

There was computer scientist Lynn Conway passing away recently, and in the thread for this article, there was some concern about the LA times author opting to use male pronouns to refer to Lynn pre-transition.

Then there was the other recent news of Lia Thomas being barred from participation in the Olympics, and any time there’s a discussion about trans athletes in sports, it invites a whole lot of yikes.

Lemmy.world is the normie instance. Unsurprisingly, a lot of normies have bad opinions. If you run into transphobes, feel free to tell them what every transphobe needs to hear: “Go fuck yourself”. Or block 'em and let them scream at a wall. It’s good to nip bigotry in the bud before it grows, but it’s also not worth letting people with hate in their hearts take up space in your mind’s temple.

  • Red bean is a staple of many Chinese desserts and it tastes sweet on its own. It makes for a good dairy-free popsicle and is quite common in China.

Vanilla and chocolate are made using beans as well; other than the fact that you can make red bean into paste and eat it as-is or frozen without milk or added sugar, it’s not that crazy a concept.
