I’ve only ever heard it used in pulpy adventure stories/games like Howard’s Conan world (which do admittedly have some if that implicit racism common to fiction from that time). Has it become more explicitly neo-Nazi?

Y’all got any more of them x3 jokers?
You’ll be hard pressed to find someone deny basic science in today’s world.
They didn’t outright deny it (out loud), but they cast doubt and equivocate about the parts that don’t agree with their preexisting worldview.
Jesuits have done some decent work for humanity, but they are not scientists, mostly because they start from a premise they want to be true and find evidence for it instead of the other way around.
Edit: in fact, why did knowledge need to be “curated” through the Dark Ages? I’ll give you a hint: it starts a “C” and ends with an “atholicism”
I used Sync at first because of the similarity to reddit, but I finally got tired of the obnoxious ads and the hypocrisy of using a ad-supported app to browse a completely ad-free service, so a month ago I switched to Voyager and I haven’t looked back. It’s not perfect, but it’s a lot better than Sync and it’s ad-free.
I’ve heard from many long time users that those cravings never really go away. But I wouldn’t describe it as “cravings.” I would describe it as rose colored glasses.
I never really thought I had a serious habit, but I dabbled in uppers for a few years before getting diagnosed as ADHD (and then taking Adderall for the last decade), and your words perfectly describe how I think about cocaine. I really did enjoy coke, and I had a lot of good times with my buddies while doing lines all night, but I don’t really “crave” coke. I miss the ritual of it and the rush as it hits your bloodstream, and if the right person offered me some right now, I’d absolutely rip a rail, but I know the experience simply will not be as good as it was then.
Once you know what you’re missing, you’ll always miss it, I think.
As are the Ellis and Lemire runs. The Brian Wood run is better than most anything in modern Marvel, too.
Edit: reading Lemire’s run a day or two after a decent psychedelic or dissociative experience will have you questioning your own sanity in a super fun and slightly terrifying way.
Edit 2: man, everything Warren Ellis touched was absolutely fantastic for a long while. It’s a shame he wound up having more than slightly problematic relationships with fans…
I understand. I feel that way occasionally, too, but honestly, I think that’s irresponsible. Apathy and an unwillingness to pay attention to injustice are huge contributing factors to why the world is as fucked as it is today.
If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention.
Except then you eat it and your mouth is numb for a bit and it helps the hangover
Fair. There’s misremembering something from your childhood and then there’s ignoring evidence that’s right in front of you.
I think it’s safe to say that person was not arguing in good faith.
Or that they missed the obvious allusions as a child and haven’t gone back and rewatched it with an adult’s knowledge of context.
I came here for this. IT WAS RIGHT THERE, OP!
I used to make a really good “graff” that was 1 gal of amber wort (made from DME for simplicity and a quick brew day) to 4 gal apple juice that always came out tasting like a back-sweetened British cider (edit: at 4.5-5.0% ABV without actually having extra sugar in it, so it could be bottle conditioned) and only needed a 1 week primary. You could definitely add apple pie spices to that base and get something special.
I miss that abomination. I need to start brewing again. Also, LMK if you want a recipe; I think I have an old BeerSmith recipe PDF in my Dropbox somewhere
Counterpoint: If you ask most elected officials edit: in the US (of either party), any two of those as policy goals would make you a socialist.
Their modern reviews are pretty bland, but from 2000-2012 or so, they were probably the best indie reviewers out there. Since then, they gotten a little too afraid to write negative reviews for stuff that other publications like and vice versa (IMHO), but they still provide a slightly different point of view than the big dogs like Rolling Stone.
These days, I typically like Consequence of Sound and Line of Best Fit a little better, and albumoftheyear.org is great for seeing both positive and negative reviews of pretty much everything out there
Edit: albumoftheyear is also a great way to find new music sites, since they cast a pretty wide net
I was being a bit snarky, but I totally agree with you. I think I honestly did find Vampire Weekend’s first album along with several of my favorite bands of all time through Pitchfork in the mid 2000’s.
As bland and useless as they’ve gotten, I will forever be grateful to Pitchfork for first introducing me to The Hold Steady, The Drive-by Truckers, and TV on the Radio.
I actually discovered a completely new music review site when I was looking for more information about them. Have any of y’all heard of something called “pitchfork?”
late 2000’s here; I went to one of the private, strict christian schools in the area, so no house parties or Greek scene for underage drinkers. So, what did we do? We learned to drink in TJ! IIRC, I think we went down 1.5x per month for two years or so until all of our friend group turned 21 and moved off campus. Luckily, we were usually smart enough to make sure one of us was 100% stone sober while we were across the border (and we always parked on the US side, obvs), but we had friends that still had some close calls.
I had a friend who drove down with a different group that got shaken down when one dumbass got caught by cops peeing in an alley on the way back to the border, and another acquaintance that spent a few weeks in jail on the Mexican side for having two (poorly made) fake twenties in his pocket. As I recall, he didn’t even try to spend them, but got searched for something unrelated and was then held without trial until his parents could get together ten thousand dollars to buy him out.
So, from 2006-2008 or so there still weren’t card readers coming back as a US citizen, but it was definitely getting sketchy. My privileged white-bread ass managed to stay out of trouble (mostly), but I definitely got lucky and wouldn’t recommend it to others. Although, during the daytime it was pretty safe as long as you didn’t get blotto, and going for cheap, delicious tacos and margaritas was a great day trip.
Damn fine cup of coffee!
