You’re right in that the analogy is way off. Here’s the only way it would make it right, is if your new date also wanted to vent about your ex. That’s probably not the case. But being a Reddit refugee is something in common for many people on Lemmy (especially right now) and so it makes perfect sense for people to talk about it.

Also, I don’t give much thought to the posts I scroll past…

Bad analogy, it would be like meeting up with all your ex-girlfriend’s other former partners and all bitching about that shared ex because you have that thing in common.

What got replaced already was the oligopoly on user-created content. That’s all that matters.

It doesn’t need to replace anything, that’s a sports mentality applied to the free flow of information. What this decade has taught us is that the doomscroll is all there is. Reddit, Tiktok, Twitter, etc. all have constant scrolling through content as their main feature. It’s a feature that’s extremely reproducible. What the fediverse does is take power away from the corporations that want to make money off of the flow of user-created content. By the fediverse’s existence, whenever some company wants to rate-limit or ban 3rd party apps, the people can now just say: “Nah.”

I’ve deleted 2 Reddit accounts now, most recent on July 1st in protest. Not going back this time, but for the people who feel like they lost something, I have some advice. Go to your own comments and sort by top. Read through the stuff you’ve said over the years that got the most positive feedback. Take it all in, and then let it go.

Let’s not be so quick to rush to judgment there, eh?

Yep, we get to watch it grow and I can be patient for that: I’m along for the ride. It’s kind of like the people who have been playing a video game since alpha get to appreciate all the features that were introduced along the way that the rest of us take for granted. I’m predicting a flood of apps for the Fediverse since it’s the most obvious next step for the third party app developers that have no Reddit to design for anymore.

Greedy Pig Boy has said for a long time that Reddit isn’t profitable. That means they’re losing money every year.

But you’re spot on, and honestly, anyone who disagrees probably underestimated the number of young folks on Reddit, Digg, etc. in the first place. I’ve been on the interwebz since IRC days and showing new folks how to act is the way you build communities. It doesn’t matter how old they are and nobody would ever know if they were lying about their age anyway. Cultivate good hoomans. Soooo tl;dr cheers!
