This assumes that they only ever have the names they have now. Call me crazy, but I suspect that immigration policies will probably shift a little at some point in the next 500 years.
Hell, I wouldn’t even be willing to bet that any given country would still be around in it’s current form by then, including Japan.

I love that the post about dis-inventing stuff is directly beneath an intrusive ad disguised as a post, a prime example of the kind of thing that should never have been invented.
The really frustrating part is that cheap generic stuff skyrocketed too. Walmart embraced inflation enthusiastically, and their knockoff mountain dew went from $0.62 to $1.70. Supply chain issues I’m sure…
I used to get that stuff 10 bottles at a time, and it was one of the few things that made it worth going there. Now I just get whatever is on sale at the local employee owned grocery chain. The price difference is negligible, almost everything else is cheaper, and I get to support some place that isn’t evil.
If every halfway respectable news outlet sounded the alarm and made Trump’s threats to democracy and the rule of law the dominant story from now until election day, he’d still have 85% of his supporters. Some would be OK with it. Some would say he’s still better than Biden. Most would never see it because they live in a media bubble that tells them what they want to hear. And more than a few would call those stories hit pieces and climb into the bubble to be safe and comfortable.
We do need the media and everyone else to sound the alarm. And even a small shift could be enough to make the difference. But as long a large portion of the population is listening to outlets that unabashedly spew extremist propaganda, we’re going to continue have this problem.
I have a similar DNS filter on my router to block ads, particularly on my TV since I can’t put ublock on it. It doesn’t work while on youtube.com, but any video that’s embedded in another site will have ads blocked. So I have a playlist I save videos to from my phone or pc, and my tv has a bookmark for a code testbed that will load the playlist as an embed.
It was still working yesterday, but no idea if that will last.
Eliminate 3rd party tools, try to force people on to a terrible app with a shitty interface, and then incentivize the content farms. A recipe for success if ever I’ve heard one.
You know what might have been a better idea? If they’d offered a profit sharing agreement to third party apps through some sort of affiliate program that allowed them to sell gold and split the revenue. They could even have kept the obscene api rates for AI scrapers by giving a massive discount to affiliated apps. This way reddit would get the revenue it was missing out on, users could support their preferred app while also giving money to reddit, and really, everybody wins.
But then spez wouldn’t get to be Elon jr, so that obviously wasn’t going to work.
Been wearing a kilt for years. I will never go back. Pants are tight, restrictive, and lack much needed ventilation. And let’s be honest, they weren’t designed to accommodate the male anatomy. Much better to have a kilt and enjoy the breeze between your knees.
And that’s just the high level corruption. There’s more theft, bribery and fraud at every level. With each step in the procurement process, another chunk of that budget is negated.
Also, at least historically, a lot of Russia’s budget goes to things that aren’t playing a primary role in the fight for Ukraine, like their nuclear arsenal, a lot of their navy, and big R&D projects that produce little more than the appearance of a modern military.
