Matrix IMO is more like a discord alternative. For private messaged I would use (and I do use) Signal. Its very easy to setup too and seems like the most reliable instant messenger.

Imagine several people building a sand castle at the beach. Anyone can join, just start building your own little tower and then connect it to the main castle (this is instances explained).
