One additional suggestion I might make is to allow you to report the post to your own instance admins but not the host admins. This would be useful for when you want a post to be hidden or an instance defederated and you don’t want to also send your identity to the instance you’re reporting.

This might be used for:

Reporting spam coming from an instance that is unlikely to delete it.

Reporting CSAM on an instance that supports it.

Reporting hate speech on instances that believe hate speech is covered by free speech.

Etc.

Yes, it is, but I’m not a Libertarian - some censorship is good. Fascists, trolls, and child pornographers deserve to be censored.

It does feel kinda weird asking someone out at their place of work and I don’t want to put her in an awkward situation.

While I get that things are different across genders, my first date out of high school was a girl who asked me out while I was working (in fact, I’ve never dated a person I met outside of school or my or their work). My dad asked my mom out while she was working. Everyone meets people at work, it’s where we spend the vast majority of our time out of the house; and the same people who say you shouldn’t approach women at their place of work say the same thing about the gym, the store, and public transit.

I find that when (many) young women say “I don’t like it when men do X” (such as, “ask me out while I’m working”), they really just mean guys who are (1) way too old, (2) overly persistent, or (3) complete strangers. If you roughly fit within the “half your age plus seven” rule, and she’s spoken to you longer than she is contractually obligated to by her job, you’re probably in the clear to offer to give her your number and to let you know if she wants to grab lunch sometime.

Ultimately the question is “What constitutes a genocide?”. Because, sure - under the most liberal possible definition of a “Genocide” - there’s a genocide against the Ughyrs in Xinjiang. But only in the same way that Spain is committing a genocide against Catalonians; or that America committed a genocide against Italian-Americans. Teaching the national language, promoting Atheism, and spreading Communism does not constitute a genocide. Implying that it does is an insult to the victims of real genocides, like those against the Jews and Roma, Armenians, American Indians, and Palestinians.

I agree with the other commenters who say that the issue is primarily that the Lemmyverse is too small for the grifters to bother influencing, but I also think federation (and the non-profit nature) plays into this.

A site like Reddit generally does not ban members just for being Conservative and expressing relatively mainstream right-wing beliefs. They have to present at least a veneer of “free speech” except in the case of hate speech and violence. In addition, they don’t want to drive away Conservative users, because that’s where their money comes from.

To a small Lemmy instance, these motives don’t come into play. More users actually costs the admins more money. And while they generally don’t ban users willy-nilly, they feel they have a right to ban people just for being right-wing dicks.

Ultimately right-wing ideology cannot survive in a space like this except in explicitly right-leaning instances; which will be subject to the “Nazi Bar” effect until those instances are defederated from the rest of the Lemmyverse.
