Not sure if you want to label it as a “captcha alternative”. In most cases I’m sure the captcha is used because they want a real person looking at the page (and the ads on the page). In this case it seems more like a way to keep either bots or people from doing nothing but consuming content (or hacking) without giving back something of value. Either way I really like the idea.
Other ways, in theory, I think you could do this kind of thing are torrent ratios (e.g. hosting one or moreLinux ISOs), general archiving (e.g. you get asked to return a random range of bytes from a file you’re supposed to be backing up), you run a weather station that reports temperature to the National Weather Service. You might think about a more general framework for just verifying if user X has been contributing something of value.
This. Sucks we can’t just say shit like it is but it’s just as easy to make it up. I’m not going to verify the claims myself but if OP said it was Vandelay Industries I might make the decision to not do business with them.
It’s a little late now since the accusation has already been made but it’s essentially legal to state verifiable facts without drawing conclusions from those facts. Still, doesn’t mean the company won’t come after you, just that they risk calling attention to the issue. Unfortunately I know of no remedy or repercussions for a company filing a baseless lawsuit.
IANAL BTW.
I stopped when it got to the trillion comparison. Surely I can find a better use out of the next two weeks of my life.
Makes me feel a little better. In 2024 I Can’t get a “Windows ready” Bluetooth dongle to be recognized by my still supported Windows computer.
Other than reasons of price (V1 is about as much as the latest models unless you go used) my V1 doesn’t auto detect when plugged into my TV. Wouldn’t mention it if my TV didn’t lock the controls and take a full minute to say, “I got no clue”.
I dunno about the way Lemmy stores data but I’m willing to bet a similar request could be made to a Lemmy hoster and as a regular person, most likely not a company, they’d be far less likely to push back. Wondering if a future evolution of the platform needs to be a little more anonymous (e.g. no IP retention, no email retention, optional ability to post anonymously while logged in).
You wouldn’t break into someone’s house and smash the DVDs they legally bought over the years would you?
Thanks, I didn’t know that was a VLC setting. It’d be nice if there was some type of standard for language and audio tracks etc. so there’s less chance of error due to free typing the name of a track.
Yeah, I do have my jelly fin set up to select English tracks by default but I’ve still had issues with the wrong track being selected. Maybe this was due to poor labeling of the audio tracks but that’s still something that never happens with a regular streaming service so my family is more resistant to use the self-hosted programs.
A separate file or if the first few bytes of a file contained the metadata.
Not always, but occasionally I have issues with playing a video and the language not being my preferred (English). Either the video doesn’t have English audio or it’s not the default. Not a biggie but it can waste some time if there’s no talking for the first few min and my family isn’t used to navigating audio settings.
How are we gonna make a laser arc? And if it was from an aerial POV it would actually cause less collateral damage than something that explodes.
Was using CinemaHD so far. Stremio looks nice but I’d prefer Jellyfin become the new go-to app for media so we’re not still flipping back and forth between apps.
I paid for 15 days of Real Debrid and other than running into a lot of non-English streams it’s been great. If I can get it convenient to download shows automatically (I’ve heard of ways to integrate with arr services) I might start cancelling services.
Drones are effective at killing people, but they’re dogshit at killing ideology.
Nah, it’s cool it’s cool. The election after this one will be a vote for Trump, because he’ll be the only one on the ballot.
Soft drinks ppl have been exterminated. 1 down…
2nd this. Not too complicated but also feature rich. Transmission is good too but a lot of tweaks are only configurable with file changes followed by a restart. This is a big PITA for someone like me that uses Docker.
That’s one way to basically ensure the US never imposes pay caps on executives.
