Remember, this guy’s entire family, the DeVos family, has their claws in lots of US policy.

Damn right I’m annoyed! Annoyed they are killing each other over a stupid piece of land that their upbringing has brainwashed them into dying for, because some “god” supposedly granted them exclusive right to!
I’m serious. There are lots of regions that could home these two warring cultures, far away from each other. Canada and one of the large South American nations, for example, or a coastal region of Australia.
I live in Canada, and if it would end the conflict I would 100% accept carving out a home for one side or the other (roll dice! I am willing to accept either! So long as the “other side” has to go somewhere on the other side of the planet) – say, a region spanning northern Alberta/Manitoba or Manitoba/Saskatchewan, of equivalent size to Israel or Gaza. We have lots of land.
On the condition that once they moved here, every citizen would swear a solemn vow that they would put the past behind them and never seek to return to their homeland or harass the “other side” wherever they moved to, again.
Wouldn’t it be better for the people on both sides to have all of us (the world’s nations) fund their move to disparate regions for each side? They wouldn’t be able to bomb each other. They wouldn’t ever have to even think about each other. They hate each other, so give them a chance for peace apart from one another.
On the other hand, if they are so fixated on their “Holy Land” and their sky daddy that they want to die for it, then fine. Let them blow each other up.
You may be able to deduce, by now, that I have a rather low opinion of organized religion and its use as a pretense for foreign and domestic policy.
EDIT: BTW I never said, nor implied, either side were “dumb” or “barbarians”. I will, however, stand by my implied assertion that the populace of both sides are brainwashed by organized religion, and authoritarians and terrorists are using that as a cudgel to achieve their own selfish aims, and are the real poison here. The only way to take away their power is to remove the dispute over the region.
Funny how I expressed the same thing a while ago and got downvoted into oblivion.
It’s simple, people (EDIT: Yes, I know it’s anything but simple…) – both sides at this point hate each other so much, there’s no point in trying to establish “who started it”. The way to save lives is to have BOTH populations moved elsewhere, opposite sides of the planet preferably, and international laws stating passport-holders of New-Palestine and New-Israel may NEVER travel to within one international border of the other. For the next 10 generations.
No one has to die. Moving them BOTH isn’t “genocide”. They can both still practice their religions – all except the bits that say “WE MUST LIVE IN THE HOLY LAND AND ONLY US AND WE CAN KILL OTHERS TO ACHIEVE IT!”.
The paradox of tolerance, that we must tolerate others’ intolerance, is folly. When someone is such a threat to others, we must actually be intolerant to their intolerance. They have broken the social contract.
Once both sides are safely relocated out of the region, then we salt the entire area around Jerusalem with low-grade radioactivity that will render it uninhabitable for generations. UN-appointed international forces standing guard around the borders to prevent anyone from entering or residing the region ever again, or until everyone forgets why they’re doing it. Make it a warning to humanity on what must happen when religions and ethnic hatred get out of control.
I know it will never, ever happen. But one could dream.
Any leader who has to sign legislation stating they have lifelong immunity from prosecution, probably needs to be prosecuted for the rest of their long life.
What dream? A domain’s quite practical for self-hosting one’s own server for all sorts of things. Doesn’t have to be the “next big thing”. This is the way the internet used to be.
It should be pointed out this was from Feb 2023, so not ‘news’… however still worth highlighting how dangerous Russian windows appear to be, especially to those who are not performing in the “special operation” to Putin’s liking.
For Nebula/CuriosityStream? I only remember I bought a combo membership near Christmas the last two years – they usually offer a year-long subscription for like $11 USD around the holidays. Look out for those, I really like CuriosityStream and find it’s worth it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/360_deal
It’s a music deal that lets the labels take a cut of everything, including revenue streams artists used to have to themselves – shows, sponsorship deals, merchandising.
It used to be that if you bought, for example, a concert t-shirt or stickers or whatever (unsure if CDs/tapes were ever exempt) at the live performance that the artist got all or most of that. Artists could also control their own merchandising and aspects of their persona outside of the studio… personal appearances etc. but now the record labels ‘own’ them more completely. A terrible turn in general, and most labels demand a ‘360 deal or nothing’ to new artists.
“Merch” used to be the way artists made a lot of their income while on tour, since they didn’t make nearly as much from their album sales from an already unfair record-deal system; now they can’t even catch a fair break on tour.
Huge acts can negotiate better deals; the rest are stuck with unfair terms.
Unless they have a 360 deal, which most new artists are forced into.
How does one actually ensure the artist gets the majority of sales, when the labels now take a cut even of merch at live shows? :(
Can artists set up a direct donation page? I’d rather use that if possible.
Yow! that looks pretty awesome. I installed it and added the Nebula plugin… wonder if there’s a CuriosityStream one as well?
Genocide? Far from it, this proposal gives every single resident of the area a new life in a new land. Only far away from their adversary, and they can live their cultures, apart, in peace.
Bomb the entire region with pork rinds and aerosolized pig fat (offensive to both warring religions there, right?) for 6 months, and give everyone there a solid deadline to pack one small bag per adult on free one-way flights, daily, to a new ‘homeland’. Canada can bequeath a region of northern Alberta-Sask-Nunavut for Jewish citizens, and… I dunno, Argentina does the same for Palestinians. Evacuees are issued special passports granting citizenship to their respective new ‘homelands’. The donor nations and new ‘homeland’ nations are each granted a one-time $1 trillion grant by the rest of Earth’s nations to set up the new arrangements.
Oh, and finally. Death penalty for any evacuee and their descendants for 7 generations who even attempt to enter the ‘other’ homeland. And after that 6-month nonlethal bacon-bombing campaign, drop something over the entire ‘holy land’ to ensure it’s uninhabitable for the next 10,000 years. No one can claim they weren’t given a chance to leave by that point…
Time to take away not just the toys, but the whole damn playground.
Edit: wow, so many downvotes. Whatever, so tell me your plan to keep these two groups at bay, without any further needless deaths, geniuses.
Geat idea! There’s no reason this couldn’t be done everywhere by citizens with access to sticker printing services… I’ve spotted a few products myself in the past year and wouldn’t be against sticking some labels on them to warn my fellow shoppers :)
:)
The molecule detected is called dimethyl sulphide (DMS). According to the article, on Earth, at least, this is only produced by life. (The AutoTL:DR bot’s summary missed that bit.)
sourcehut, self-hosted Gogs or Forgejo are some good candidates. Gitea is popular, but there’s apparently been some drama about them going commercial without proper buy-in from their contributors. (The code lineage is AFAIK Gogs → Gitea → Forgejo).
All the above solutions make it super-easy to mirror a github project as well, just in case it goes away :) Doing so has saved my arse more than a few times when github takes a repo down for stupid reasons.
Gitlab seems too heavyweight to me. I use Gogs myself on my home server. No code review tools via PR ala github/gitlab, but I don’t need those in my web frontend.
Posts you make on a forum are not “works” that are copyrightable.
That may depend on the platform – slashdot (remember that site?) once upon a time had a footer on their pages stating “All posts belong to their authors”. There were a few big debates about that being legally enforceable. Hmm. I wonder if there ever was a legal ruling on that.
I notice today their site does not have such a disclaimer. Probably disappeared long ago, due to one of their many corporate buyouts.
A noble thing if you could pull it off.
But stay away from windows for the rest of your life and always prepare your own tea.
