100% agree on this, and I guess it’s because nerds are the first ones to discover and use new tech. It also gives a sense of real community since everyone speaks the same language. But of course this means that people outside the circle will wonder what the fuck is going on. :)
About teenagers and people attacking you, yeah, that’s how some of them are. I get comments where they intentionally misunderstand something just to be able to copy/paste some default snarky response, because that’s how they have fun feeling superior. :).
It’s never original because they are not very bright, it’s just quotes and oneliners they saw online and now they use them because they like them. Doesn’t bother me, I just don’t respond and continue in other threads instead. I honestly just smile about it and move on. You should try it.
You have to realize that lemmy is just entertainment and some people get entertained if they can make you upset and angry.

Sounds like you haven’t seen this happen before… This is a typical pattern in IT. Sites will come and go. It’s a good thing that people take action when they are not happy. Reddit exploited users and moderators to work for free, then sold their data.
I think it’s the same echo chamber here, but it’s smaller. People block instances they don’t like, and are in favor of moderators removing controversial things, specially around communism and tankies.
I just like that it’s not run by big tech. Just discussions, no companies or ads. I think most users are tech people.
Late thirties is aging? That’s like peak life. You have money and family (at least a chance of that) and purpose in your life. You have confidence and you know who you are.
You are still a bit dumb, but less dumb than twenty somethings. I liked my late thirties.

This is me right now, constantly thinking about how to implement a thing I’m working on. Even in bed I wake up and think about it. Lols.
I thought they let you use the version you used when you started subscribing, not then you ended the subscription? This was something a lot of people were upset about. That if you subscribe for a year and stop, you end up with a year old version.
Many weird behaviors has been caused by this. A friend of mine couldnt see any new posts in a community anymore until he figured out this was the reason.
Took a long time to figure out too… It’s not exactly intuitive.
Even worse when you have a bug and you cant stop trying to find it and fix it. I often have the feeling that if I stop now, I lose the entire context of what I’m doing and it’s just so hard to get started again the next day.
I prefer to dig in until I find it, even when tired and hungry.

Haha yeah I can see how it’s similar, specially if you have never read about it yourself and someone says “we actually live under a dome”, which means everything must be explained another way, since there is no space, no satellites, nothing. :)
I think flat earth ideas are fascinating. Guess I’m a bit nuts but I enjoy reading how they explain things. :)
I don’t think they are more dumb than anyone else. If you ask someone random to explain how gravity keeps the water on the surface, they can’t of course. Everyone goes to a web page and looks it up.
So I enjoy reading it. It’s just fun and interesting.
This was a thing in the beginning, a lot of instances had just spinning buttons on signup if email didn’t work correctly.
I’m also trying hard to avoid being in the office, even taking pay cuts for it. I can’t sit in a damn office and write code. The stress from trying to block out people moving and talking is exhausting.
