I’ve had kiosks prompt me for tips, even making me hit Custom and type 0.00.
I’m so tired of Wall Street Journal, Readers Digest, Square, and Clover pushing the idea that we need to tip everybody everywhere because covid. It’s ridiculous. I don’t want to live in a country where everybody behind a counter can be paid $2.13 an hour.
One thought that could change this whole thing:
Paying higher wages.
It’s a crazy idea!
Right? It’s not covid. The media and Square are helping employers get away with shit wages.
the unfortunate truth is higher wages are a half measure. Once you raise wages, what does every tom dick and jane business owner do? raise their prices to match the increased wage. I’m not skilled enough in socioeconomics but the wage increase would need to be followed by a system protection of goods and services at the current value, which is already inflated.
Prices went up anyway. Minimum wage increases aren’t a permanent fix, of course.
But let’s do them anyway, and stop trying to predict the future.

I don’t tgink tipping is responsible for that low a wage. in BC Canada its almost $16 min wage, plus tips

Yep, but the underlying problem is not tipping, it is just shitty US laws, otherwise we would see the same low wage in Canada because tip culture is the same
Tipping culture is a thing in Canada only because of its proximity to the US. It’s not a thing in the rest of the world. Tipping always pushes wages down because why would employers need to pay more when employees get tips?
The whole tipping thing started as a way for restaurant owners to pay their servers less (or nothing). It needs to go.
it didn’t start that way, it was a way to ensure prompt attentive service, it was on the table at the start so staff saw a bonus coming for being very attentive. Not saying that is a good way either, but USA has allowed it to drive down wages. Here minimum wage is almost identical across the country regardless of job type.
Are tips mandatory in Canada like they are here in the US? If yes, then customers are still subsidizing employee wages.
Suggested, not mandatory. Some places have stopped allowing tips being accepted by staff.
