Anyone feel up to explaining what matrix is and is for? I’ve seen the name in passing but don’t have any clue about it

Depends on what client you’re using
Element does, I think matrix as a protocol also does (with the VoIP stuff) but at the very least element does.
Interesting to see it as a alternative to discord, i know matrix only as an encrypted messenger.
Think of it like discord, but federated.
