Install the extension Cookie Auto Delete, use FreeTube (desktop application) or one of the youtube alternatives (newpipe on mobile), yewtu.be, inv.nadeko.net, yt.artemislena.eu, piped.video on browser/desktop (just replace youtube.com with one of those domains and you’re good to go).
yewtu.be also has a progressive mobile app!

BAsically Susan Wojcicki (ex CEO of YT) set the precedent for YT being shit
Not only that, but Chrome updates are insane, they keep changing the UI to shit over and over again for months and every time we must find a way to return to the old one.
Not too long ago discord made a change that’s genuinely helpful for mobile (i.e. Assigning the DM in a separate tab) only to fuck it up by reverting. Yeah capitalism rewards incompetence.
Get Newpipe if you don’t mind not being able to comment or upload on mobile
I’ve only been using the subscriptions tab for a few months now and, man, my life couldn’t be better. I only access youtube on desktop by FreeTube app. I was upset too when disabling the history took out my homepage, but see it as an unwanted gift, now you can migrate to a local saved history, and this thing fucking rules. (In Mobile you can use NewPipe or some of its endless forks.)
